Good writers are good observers.
Whether it’s a note, a letter, or a book, the best ones to read are those that make you see and feel what the writer is describing or conveying. The writers who do that best are good observers. Being observant is a skill we can all cultivate.
Autumn is the perfect time to hone your observational skills because so much is changing! Here in the northern hemisphere, there are more red leaves on my crimson maple tree every day. Yellow walnut leaves are falling early because of the drought, dotting the grass like ornaments. Squirrels are in a frenzy of activity as they sense winter coming on. We find the spiky chestnut burrs they’ve been hiding in the strangest places (like the cone of our rain gauge). We haven’t seen a male ruby-throated hummingbird at our feeders in over a week because they’ve already departed for their migration south. The females will stay around a few more days until they’re sure their young are ready to make the trip, and in the meantime, they’re competing for the sugar water even though I keep the feeders full and clean.
Practice paying attention and then share your observations in your next note or letter. It’s like painting a picture with words.
