“Be pitiful, for every man is fighting a hard battle.” ~Ian McClaren
Ian McClaren was the pen name for John Watson (1860-1907), a Scottish author and Free Church of Scotland minister. The quote above—published in 1897 in The Upper Room, a collection of his sermons and spiritual reflections—has since been paraphrased and misattributed, but what an important thing to remember!
Think about someone you know who might be struggling. Perhaps there has been a death in their family; maybe they’ve lost a pet. Perhaps they struggle with depression, chronic pain, or terminal disease. Loneliness can be crippling—especially for the elderly—often made worse by a lack of financial stability.
Let’s face it: we could write this kind of note every day and never run out of worthy recipients.
If someone else entirely comes to mind, write to them and forget today’s prompt. I’d love to hear who you decided to write to and why! I’ll be posting my own daily activities in my Substack NOTES and my Facebook group, “The Art of the Heartspoken Note.”

The mantra of the Heartspoken Movement
Whether written or spoken, words from the heart will never fail you!
Thank you for this reminder! I know a few folks who might be comforted by a note 😊
